DM: "Roll a d6 to beat the minotaur."
Player: "I rolled a 6! I've beaten the minotaur..."

In abstraction at very low detail that works. You'd then roll a fistful of dice for the party, and anyone rolling under a certain number comes up injured.

For the DM's side this works for brevity when concerning NPC actions and success.

That's not fun though. Fun is in the process.

No, I mean, rolling the dice to determine if an attack or defense effect works or not.

The mechanic is.... I dunno, this needs work:

-Total opposing Defense or Offense scores....

-Person with a higher score gets more dice, difference in dice

-Roll off; one person rolls a bunch of dice, the other rolls one dice

-Compare number of dice that match the 'single' dice the other person had, or are lower than their roll

-If there are any dice that are equal to, or lower than the 'single' rolled dice; then that amount is added to the amount of damage done when the Ability in question is used. Dice over the single-roll subtract from your damage done.

-Abilities tend to deal;

Simple 1/4 your Levels
Special 1/2 your Levels
Super All of your levels

+/- The result of the roll-off.

Note: not all abilities are attacks, some are repair/healing or transportation, or social abilities. I'm not sure what "defensive" abilities will be like though, or what their mechanic will be.

Defensive abilities could be things that will block a certain amount of damage.

My proposed mechanic isn't great, and might need scrapping.

While everyone's Philosophy is not in accord, that doesn't mean we're not on board.

I don't see the Mephy description as being much of a personality flaw, though. They can have unlimited consequence-free sex. Obviously they're not going to have the same hangups about it as humans, because humans have STDs and unwanted pregnancy.

Similarly, their stuff-giving behaviour strikes me as entirely appropriate in a race that can create stuff at random. For a human analogue, look at music copying. It takes no effort to rip a CD, so people are very giving with the product of other people's labour.

I'm assuming that Mephys can destroy stuff as easily as they can create it, so we don't end up with an Izzard sketch (1:16)
